If you are an iPhone owner you are sure to hear the term “Jailbreak iPhone”, at first the words might sound scary, jail and break, umm, no thanks. Don’t let the words scare you, jailbreaking will set your device free, it will release it from the jail cell that Apple puts all iPhones in when they are initially sold.
Jail Cell? Apple sells all iPhones locked down so that they can only get apps from the appstore in turn making Apple more money. When you free yourself from jail you “jail break” to freedom and have the ability to customize your iPhone as you please and add apps to your phone for free. Though we do not endorse downloading free apps, we do want to let you know about this ability because many jailbreak for the sole reason to get paid apps for FREE!
Why Jailbreak your iPhone?
It is LEGAL (under Digital Millennium Copyright Act – DMCA of 2010)
Free Custom Themes (winterboard)
Tweak the iPhone Settings (sbsettings)
Free games and apps (We don’t endorse this)
Full customization of the look and feel(five icon dock, home screen wallpaper, vertical scrolling, icon sizes)
The whole process is fully reversible!
Unlock the iPhone, Carrier unlock your iPhone so can insert any sim card and the iPhone will work.
Are there any reasons not to jailbreak your iPhone? Here are a couple that I can think of:
- It can take time in some cases and can be stressful
- You can’t get the latest Apple updates for your iPhone (you have to wait till the jailbreak community comes out with a release, this can take months)
- You morally think it’s wrong, on the flip side of the coin maybe it’s morally wrong for Apple to lockdown the devices.
- You void the warranty (Officially you void the warranty, but you can in most cases simply reverse the jailbreak and factory restore the settings and you should be fine)
How to Jailbreak?
Ok now comes the confusing part, jailbreaking your iPhone. Since jailbreaking is an “Underground” procedure the information is very scattered and it can be a very confusing and difficult task. However in most cases it’s as easy as clicking the mouse a couple times and then dancing around the room to your new found freedom!
